CITIZENSHIP AND COMMITMENT

This blog is about the presence of the values of citizenship and commitment in the poem called     "the raven" by Edgar allan poe, the poem overall has a very somber and depressing atmosphere, however hidden within the poem is an undertone that exemplifies this 2 values, the value of commitment is the most prevalent of the two values because the story is basically about the commitment the speaker has with his wife , because even if she has passed away , he is still loyal to her, even in death, this might be the driving reason for the author`s apparent seclusion from society, because he might see it as disrespectful towards his wife if he were to stop mourning for her, however if we analyze the story more closely, the apparent sense of "commitment" may appear to be on the brink of turning into obsession, due to the fact that the man cannot let go of the fact that his wife died, so he tries to mask his obsession with her with an apparent sense of commitment, the man also shows commitment towards the raven, he is committed to find out its origins and its overall meaning and purpose, we can see this when starts to speculate about who sent the raven, the man asks himself if the raven was sent by a kind of Godly entity or even by the Devil himself, later he begins to question if it could have been a representation of lenore, or even for the raven to be Lenore herself reincarnated, eventually he manages to see past all of this and instead commits himself to become angry at the raven , as the word "nevermore" is driving him completely mad. The speaker also commits himself to petty things because he gets angered easily by a harmless bird . We could also say that if the raven were to be revealed as a sentient entity that it also has a wicked sense of commitment as he is mercilessly tormenting a grieving man without any apparent motivation or purpose, he keeps saying nevermore, which is a word that in some way may reflect the reality and futility of the man`s apparent commitment to his wife because it could mean that even if he commits the rest of his life to mourn her passing he would never see her again, no matter what he did, nevermore could also mean that if the man manages to get over it, his life would never be the same again anymore, because he has already turned into an outcast of society, meaning he could never hope to integrate himself on society again. Another point of commitment might be the author himself , because Edgar Allan Poe is widely known for making his characters suffer, so he, in a twisted way, is himself committed towards achieving this goals. Personally i don`t think the value of citizenship is present in the story, because the value of citizenship is about being included into a society or community and actively participating in it, while the main character clearly avoids society at all costs in order to mourn his wife, thus the value of citizenship is obscured by the main character`s blind faith in his dead wife, leading to his seclusion in his house. In conclusion the value in commitment is the most recurrent value in the story, while the value of citizenship is not present at all, but rather the contrary happens, in the end this story brilliantly illustrates the path towards self destruction of a human being, brought to bear due to over commitment and blind faith
