Thankfulness and trustworthiness

The devil and Tom Walker is a story about a man who makes a deal with the devil, in this story there are two main values trustworthiness and thankfulness, trustworthiness is the ability to trust another person , and thankfulness is the act of being grateful towards somebody, throughout this story we come across situations where this values are and are not present in the story, this is exemplified in the relationships between characters and in their own personalities.
Trustworthiness is absent from the story except for one moment, instead the characters tend to be untrustworthy with each other, for instance, Tom`s relationship with his wife is one of complete distrust, because the wife thinks Tom is a miserly man, and Tom thinks his wife is a cheater and a hoarder, another example is when Tom tells the wife about the deal, and the wife betrays him and goes to make the deal on her own, but instead she gets killed by the devil, another example is when Tom becomes extremely religious due to his distrust of the devil, this eventually leads to his death when he breaks the deal, the only situation where trustworthiness is present, is when the people Tom is scamming trust Tom and believe he is their friend, but instead he is exploiting them.
Thankfulness is also absent from the story except for some situations, instead the characters tend to be really ungrateful to each other, an example of this is when Tom makes the deal, because even when he becomes rich and powerful, he is ungrateful to the devil, and proceeds to regret and break the deal, another example is Tom`s wife, because even though Tom gives her a home and money, she thinks he is miserly, the only time when a character is thankful is when Tom is glad that the devil killed his wife.
